Another round of picks is in for the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft. There are plenty of strong players remaining, though it’s about that time in the draft when you start to see those players who have fallen for any number of reasons finally get picked.
NFL Draft results: Barrett Jones off the board, Steelers take QB Landry Jones
A new group of fourth-round picks are in, and Alabama guard Barrett Jones is off the board. On top of that, the Pittsburgh Steelers may finally have Ben Roethlisberger’s backup: Landry Jones.
We're going to take a look at a few picks, starting with Barrett Jones going to the St. Louis Rams at No. 113.
113, St. Louis Rams: Barrett Jones, OL, Alabama
The St. Louis Rams are sticking with Sam Bradford at the quarterback position and they've done everything they can thus far to improve the team around him. Part of that is bringing in extra protection and Jones fits that bill. It's likely he'll compete for a job from the get-go, though he's not a guaranteed starter by any means.
114, Dallas Cowboys: B.W. Webb, CB, William & Mary
Dallas has been looking for secondary help for a couple seasons now, and Webb should be able to slot nicely into the equation. He’ll be fighting an uphill battle to earn himself a starting job, but he has the talent to be considered for that role in the future. Here’s a brief writeup on Webb’s college career and his offseason in the leadup to the draft:
After a redshirt season, Webb won the starting CB position in his freshman year and was one of the standout players in the small FCS school. He was named first team All-Conference player three times and finished his college career with 11 interceptions.
A bit undersized at 5’10 and 184 pounds, Webb is praised for his ball hawk skills and ability to keep up in man coverage. He got enough attention to earn invitations to the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine, where he continued to open eyes.
115, Pittsburgh Steelers: Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma
The Steelers have Ben Roethlisberger at the quarterback position, but he won't be around forever and, really, they haven't had a quality backup in some time. Roethlisberger has a tendency to get banged up here and there, and bringing in Jones to develop can only be seen as a positive move. Here's some more info on Jones:
Jones was very productive in his career with the Sooners. He threw for over 4,200 yards and completed at least 63 percent of his passes in each of his final three seasons. At 6’4, 218 pounds, Jones is built like a prototypical quarterback, with the arm to match. There is a lot to like about Jones’ game from a physical standpoint.
116, Arizona Cardinals: Earl Watford, OL, James Madison
Arizona has one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL, and if they're hoping that Carson Palmer experiences a career resurgence in 2013, then they'll absolutely need to give him some protection. Watford is a little raw and is coming from a small school, but the Cardinals need to add bodies to compete, which Watford will do.
117, Chicago Bears: Khaseem Greene, OLB, Rutgers
Chicago needs to replace Nick Roach, and, really, need linebackers at all positions. Greene is raw out of Rutgers, but the Bears are likely hoping he can earn some playing time on defense in his rookie season. Here's a brief writeup on Greene:
Greene was prolific in college, total 276 tackles over his final two seasons at Rutgers. He also had the impressive habit of stripping ball carriers. Over that same time span, Greene forced nine fumbles (13 for his career). He was also an impressive pass rusher, total six sacks among his 12 tackles for loss last season.
