Picks are flying fast as we approach the midway point of the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Two players from Syracuse, Ryan Nassib and Shamarko Thomas, came off the board back to back with the Nos. 110 and 111 overall picks, followed by the third quarterback taken so far in the round, Tyler Wilson.
2013 NFL Draft results: Shamarko Thomas, Tyler Wilson fall midway through 4th round
Midway through the 4th round of the 2013 NFL Draft, 3 quarterbacks and 2 Syracuse players have already fallen.
108. Carolina Panthers: Edmund Kugbila OG Valdosta State, 6'4, 317 pounds
Panthers plucked Kugbila from under the radar. He played at Valdosta State, and helped his team win a Division II national championship last season. Kugbila, from Ghana, is raw, but he moves very well for his size. Kugbila may need some time to develop before he sees the field, but there’s a lot to like for Panthers fans.
109. Green Bay Packers: David Bakhtiari OT Colorado, 6'4, 299 pounds
Aaron Rodgers got paid this weekend, and on Saturday, he got a potential blindside protector. Bakhtiari may need to add some strength and bulk, but he has the skillset to see the field at the next level. Here's some more on Bakhtiari:
He’ll have to put on weight in the pros so he isn’t pushed around by bigger defensive tackles and ends. He does have the nasty attitude, though, necessary for offensive linemen to finish blocks. He could provide solid depth on the offensive line early on and possibly work his way into the starting lineup.
110. New York Giants: Ryan Nassib QB Syracuse, 6'2, 227 pounds
Now nearly half way through the fourth round, Nassib FINALLY falls. The Giants obviously don’t have much of need for a starting quarterback, but he should be a solid backup. With some development, the Giants might be able to swing Nassib in a trade for a higher draft pick down the line. From SB Nation’s post on the pick:
Nassib is thick, and has a strong arm. He is very accurate when gets in a rhythm and sets his feet. Nassib is confident in his ability, occasionally to a fault. He has a tendency to force throws at times. He will also need to learn how keep his wits when pressure comes. With some more development, however, he has the potential to be a star in the NFL.
111. Pittsburgh Steelers: Shamarko Thomas S Syracuse, 5'10, 206 pounds
Syracuse players go back to back. Steelers fans should love Thomas. He very much fits the Troy Polamalu mold. Thomas isn't huge, but he has insane athleticism. At the NFL Combine, he had a 40-inch vertical and ran 4.42 in the 40-yard dash. Thomas will need some work on his cover skills before he can be a reliable starter.
112. Oakland Raiders: Tyler Wilson QB Arkansas, 6'2, 215 pounds
Wilson probably should have entered the NFL Draft a year early, truth be told. That said, he has all the physical tools to be a starter in the NFL. Though Matt Flynn is the presumptive starter in Oakland, Wilson will have a chance to compete for playing time. From SB Nation's profile:
There’s no denying his physical skills or his aptitude as a quarterback; Wilson threw for 225 or more yards in 10 of the 11 games he played as a senior, averaging 308 yards and two scores per game. There’s no denying his abilities as a leader. But sometimes it just makes sense to go early.
