Aaron Rodgers wants extension with Packers by April 15

Aaron Rodgers wants to finalize his contract extension with the Green Bay Packers by April 15.

Jonathan Daniel

Aaron Rodgers is expected to receive a contract extension from the Green Bay Packers at some point this offseason -- and the extension is likely going to make him the highest paid player in NFL history. Rodgers wants to have his contract extension in place by Apr. 15, when the Packers report for offseason conditioning, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.

Rodgers and Green Bay are reportedly $2 million apart on average annual value, but the two sides are expected to find middle ground sooner rather than later. The Packers have approximately $18 million in cap room to spend this offseason, making fans wonder why Green Bay has been inactive in free agency. Green Bay is planning to allocate its resources to extending Rodgers and Clay Matthews, rather than spend in free agency.

Rodgers established himself as one of the NFL's premiere quarterbacks in 2010, leading the Packers to a Super Bowl victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. He followed up Green Bay's magical playoff run by leading the Packers to a 15-1 record in 2011, while throwing for 4,643 yards and 45 touchdowns, completing more than 68 percent of his passes en route to winning the MVP award.

Though the Packers were eliminated in the divisional round of the playoffs last year, Rodgers still had an excellent season, throwing for 4,295 yards and 39 touchdowns.

Without question, Rodgers is on the short list of quarterbacks who can lay claim to the title of best quarterback in the league. It's expected that Rodgers' next contract will be worth more than Joe Flacco's six-year, $120.6 million contract.
