Geno Smith didn’t fire his agent for not going No. 1 overall, per report

The newest (we think) Jets quarterback reportedly wasn’t prepared for his fall in the draft, but didn’t expect to go first overall, either.

After quarterback Geno Smith was selected with the 39th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft by the New York Jets, he parted ways with his former agents from Select Sports on Tuesday morning.

Speculation began to spread that Smith fired his agents as a result of his fall down the draft board, as Smith was long-thought the best quarterback prospect in this year's draft but was not the first one taken. Part of that could still be true, but according to a report from Patrick Southern of Blue & Gold News on Tuesday, Smith didn't expect to be selected with the first overall pick by the Kansas City Chiefs, refuting the idea that that was the exact reason behind the firings.

Instead, Southern reports that sources say Smith’s agents didn’t have him ready to handle the situation he wound up finding himself in: slipping out of the first round. That, and an additional report from Southern stating that Smith’s agent left New York City on the second day of the draft to attend to other clients in Houston, are now potential reasons behind Smith’s decision to look for new representation.

Smith, per Sports Business Journal’s Liz Mullen, can’t officially hire a new agent for another five days.
