Dallas Cowboys reportedly ask Doug Free to take salary cut

Looking for salary cap room, the Cowboys have asked right tackle Doug Free to take a pay cut from the $7 million he is owed in 2013.

Matthew Emmons-US PRESSWIRE

In an attempt to free up some more salary cap space, the Dallas Cowboys have asked starting right tackle Doug Free to take a pay cut for the 2013 season according to Ian Rapoport. Dallas would like to sign free agent tackle Eric Winston, but don't have enough money to do so at the moment; Free agreeing to reduce his salary would help the Cowboys create that space.

Free is schedule to make $7 million next season, but his salary cap hit is $10.02 million and the Cowboys would receive the same hit even if they cut Free, giving him little incentive to agree to reduce his pay. Free has spent his entire six-year career with the Cowboys, signing a four-year, $32 million deal in 2011. Last season Free struggled mightily as the most penalized offensive tackle in the NFL.

Winston would likely replace Free as the starting right tackle, either making Free a backup or moving him to right guard. Winston spent the 2012 season with the Kansas City Chiefs and is seeking between $3 and $4 million in a short-term deal according to Chris Mortensen.
