Roger Goodell selects Mike Tomlin for NFL competition committee

The Pittsburgh Steelers coach is the newest member of the competition committee, which helps make rule changes to the game.

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell selected Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin as the newest member of the NFL competition committee, replacing former Arizona Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt. Tomlin had previously served on the coaches subcommittee.

Tomlin joins the eight person committee of NFL coaches and executives (Tomlin is the third coach along with Jeff Fisher and Marvin Lewis) and said he was honored by the selection. "I am excited for the opportunity to help maintain and strengthen the NFL game, and I look forward to contributing any way that I can," Tomlin said.

It is an interesting position for Tomlin, as the Steelers players have been among the most vocal in opposition of recent changes to the NFL rules regarding player safety. As a member of the competition committee Tomlin would help suggest any future rule changes.

Commissioner Goodell praised Tomlin and believes he will be a valuable contributor to the committee. Goodell said, “Mike has strong, perceptive views about the game and is effective in expressing them. We look forward to his contributions to the Committee’s ongoing mission to improve the game.”
