NFL Draft 2013: Jets will not pressure Geno Smith

The Jets may need to improve at the QB position, but they won’t let that need dictate their plan for Geno Smith.

Coming into the 2013 NFL draft, the Jets' biggest need was arguably at quarterback to replace Mark Sanchez. The Jets selected former West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith, who fell to No. 39, but general manager John Idzik isn't planning on pressuring him to start right away, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.

“We don’t feel like there’s any pressure to get him in there right away, especially with the cast of quarterbacks we have in the competition,” Idzik told ESPN.

After the release of Tim Tebow, the Jets still have David Garrard, Greg McElroy, Sanchez and Matt Simms in addition to Smith. Many believe the Jets will hold on to Sanchez due to the amount of guaranteed money he's owed. However, Idzik said that they will "take finances out of it" when deciding the quarterback's future. If Sanchez is in fact released, it would give Smith one fewer quarterback to compete with.

With Smith's ability to throw and move the ball down the field with his legs, the Jets could look to run an offense similar to those of the Washington Redskins and the San Francisco 49ers, who both found success with athletic quarterbacks. However, he'll have to show Idzik and the rest of the staff that he's ready to lead the offense first.
