Buddy Nix steps down as Bills general manager

The GM will remain with Buffalo in an advisory role.

The Buffalo Bills held a press conference today to announce that general manager Buddy Nix will leave the post for a new role as a "special assistant" to the team.

The 73-year-old Nix stated that schedule demands and family were reasons for the move.

“I’ve made this decision to step away from the General Manager’s position because I feel it is the right time,” said Nix. “By the ‘right time’ I mean I think we have a good young roster, an excellent head coach with a good staff, and it’s time to let someone else handle these responsibilities and move forward together.

“Timing is the main thing, but there are other benefits as well. This job is very demanding with a 24-7 schedule of responsibilities. This new position will enable me to spend more time with my family. I appreciate the opportunity given to me by Mr. Wilson and Russ (Brandon) and I’m fortunate to step away from the job and still remain a part of the team.”

The Bills’ front office and overall leadership has been in a state of transition throughout the offseason. Team executive Russ Brandon was named President and CEO in January, and Doug Marrone was hired as head coach after Chan Gailey was fired. Doug Whaley has been the team’s assistant general manager and is likely to step into the GM role after Nix steps down.

With the addition of Marrone and new quarterback EJ Manuel taken in the first round of this year’s NFL Draft, Nix clearly believes the Bills are on the right course for the foreseeable future.
