Ryan Kalil injury: Panthers OL ‘on track’ in rehab

Kalil’s 2012 season ended in October, but he expects to be ready in time for the upcoming season.

Carolina Panthers center Ryan Kalil is far removed from a Lisfranc injury that ended his 2012 season, but is still on the path to return to the field. The offensive lineman told Alex Marvez of Sirius XM NFL Radio that he is "on track" in his recovery.

Kalil, 28, admitted to Marvez that the recovery was a test of his patience, as the foot injury was suffered by the three-time Pro Bowler in October and still hasn't returned to 100 percent. New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes, Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew and running back Cedric Benson suffered Lisfranc injuries as well during the 2012 season, a bizarre outburst of a previously rare injury.

Earlier in the offseason, Kalil helped the Panthers out by restructuring his contract to free up more than $2.2 million in cap space for the team in 2013. Kalil became the highest-paid center in NFL history in 2011 when he signed a six-year deal worth $49 million.

While the Panthers didn't add a center in the 2013 NFL Draft, they did make an addition along the interior as fourth-round selection Edmund Kugbila of Valdosta State is expected to have a chance to compete for a starting role at right guard.
