Stevie Johnson injury: Bills WR sidelined with back strain

Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson has been benched by a back injury.

The Buffalo Bills No. 1 receiver Stevie Johnson, has been sidelined by a back strain which has caused him to miss the team's first Organized Team Activities and has the normally upbeat receiver a little bummed out, according to the team's official site.

“I’m getting better,” said Johnson. “It’s just frustrating seeing the guys running around, but it’s getting better.”

Johnson isn’t sure when he’ll be cleared to rejoin the team on the practice field but he did say he’s doing everything he can to recover as fast as possible.

“I don’t know it’s just a timing thing,” he said. “I’m just doing everything that they’re telling me to. I’m doing the weight room stuff. Of course I’m inside the playbook and when they give me the green light I’ll be ready to go.”

Who has been on the field is rookie quarterback E.J. Manuel, selected by the Bills in the first round of the 2013 draft out of Florida State with the No. 16 overall pick. Johnson hasn't been able to work with Manuel yet, but from what he's seen, especially from college film, he's impressed.

“Just his overall game. Watching him right now everybody is still in the learning phase so you’re not just going out there playing like you would if you were in the backyard. Watching his film from his college days he’s a dynamic quarterback. He’s big, he can run and throw, he can make every pass. I like it. It’s going to be fun this year. I just can’t wait to get out there with the guys.”

It's unclear whether Manuel will start as a rookie or if the team will be led by Kevin Kolb, who was signed as a free agent. However, which ever quarterback is under center will need Johnson on the field. He has racked up 3,235 receiving yards and 25 touchdowns over the last five seasons and has had over 1,000 yards receiving in each of the last three seasons.
