New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski recently had an MRI on a disc in his back and, depending on the results, could need surgery to fix it, according to a report from Mike Garafolo of USA Today Sports on Friday.

This news comes on the heels of a report that Gronkowski will probably undergo a fourth surgery on his left forearm on Monday. Following that procedure, as Garafolo reports, Gronkowski is expected to pay a visit to spine specialist Robert Watkins, presumably to help determine whether or not back surgery is necessary.

The possible silver lining for Gronkowski and the Patriots should he in fact require back surgery is that, as Garafolo and ESPN’s Adam Schefter both note, it could likely be scheduled during the time that he’s recovering from the operation on his arm. This way his rehabilitation time might not need to rub any closer to important dates on the team’s calendar.

In 2012 for the Patriots, playing in 11 games, Gronkowski caught 55 passes for 790 yards and 11 touchdowns.
