NFL rumors: Richard Seymour, Falcons could reach deal soon

Seymour could join the Falcons in June after Tyson Clabo’s contract is off the books, freeing up space.

Ed Szczepanski-US PRESSWIRE

Veteran defensive lineman Richard Seymour has been without a team since his contract with the Oakland Raiders was voided in February, but he may get his wish to join a contender, as Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports the seven-time Pro Bowler could be a member of the Atlanta Falcons soon.

The Falcoholic: Falcons in the top 100?

According to Rapoport, the Falcons have shown the most interest in Seymour; however, the team has less than $2 million in cap space to work with. Once offensive tackle Tyson Clabo's salary comes off the books on June 1, the team's cap room will inflate to more than $6 million, which could be the reason why the Falcons have waited to sign Seymour.

Dave Choate of SB Nation’s The Falcoholic talked on Thursday about the impact that Seymour could have with the Falcons:

This would be a big signing for the Falcons, who could really use a defensive tackle who can rush the passer and someone to add size up front. Seymour may be aging, but he’s still an effective player and he would give the Falcons a potent force at defensive tackle and defensive end, depending on how they’re deploying their front seven.

Seymour, 33, made five consecutive Pro Bowls with the Patriots, but was traded to the Raiders prior to the 2009 season. He was elected to two more Pro Bowls in 2010 and 2011, but injuries cost Seymour half his 2012 season and the team voided the remainder of his contract after the season.

In 12 NFL seasons, Seymour has accumulated 57.5 sacks and could help a Falcons team that finished as the fifth-worst team at sacking opposing quarterbacks in 2012.
