Quentin Jammer signs with Broncos, will play safety

The longtime Chargers corner is reportedly going to shift to safety after signing with Denver.

Ron Schwane-US PRESSWIRE

Quentin Jammer agreed to switch AFC West division teams this week, bolting the San Diego Chargers for the Denver Broncos, where he will also be changing positions -- from cornerback to safety -- according to a report from Mike Klis of The Denver Post on Wednesday.

After courting free agent safety Charles Woodson -- who eventually signed with the Oakland Raiders -- Denver inked Jammer to a deal worth around the veteran's minimum of $940,000, according to Klis. Jammer spent his entire 12-year career in San Diego playing mostly cornerback, but the Broncos' depth at that position may have led to the choice to make Jammer a safety.

Denver also added free agent corner Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie this offseason and drafted cornerback Kayvon Webster (out of South Florida) in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. They, along with Jammer, join veteran Champ Bailey, Chris Harris and a pass defense that allowed 199.6 yards through the air per game in 2012, the third-best average in the league.

It would appear that Denver was set on adding a veteran capable of playing safety. After Woodson decided to sign with the Raiders, the Broncos got Jammer for a little less than they likely would’ve paid to the 2009 Defensive Player of the Year.

Jammer has been durable, missing only four regular-season games over his career. In 2012 he registered 64 combined tackles, one forced fumble (and three fumble recoveries), nine passes defensed and three interceptions, one of which was returned 80 yards for a touchdown against Peyton Manning and the Broncos in Week 6.

Jammer is, according to Klis, set to join his new teammates in their organized team activities on Thursday.
