Jets sign WR Ben Obomanu, place QB David Garrard on reserve/retired list

With Garrard officially off New York’s roster, the Jets added the former Seahawks wideout.

Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE

The New York Jets added quarterback David Garrard to their reserve/retired list and signed wide receiver Ben Obomanu to fill the open roster space, according to the team's Twitter account on Thursday.

After signing with the Jets in March, Garrard was thought to be a potentially steadying presence at a position where New York is searching for consistency and production. However, lingering knee issues forced Garrard to halt his comeback attempt.

His role with the team, now that he's officially off the active roster, remains unclear. The Jets offered Garrard a coaching internship and are still waiting on his decision. Mark Sanchez and rookie Geno Smith will likely now compete for the starting quarterback job, though Greg McElroy and Matt Simms are also listed on the team's roster.

The Jets filled the open roster spot by signing Obomanu. Previously with the Seattle Seahawks, Obomanu caught four passes for 58 yards in eight games in 2012. For his career, Obomanu has 87 catches for 1,209 yards and seven touchdowns.

If Garrard's run in the NFL is indeed over, he'll finish his career with 16,003 passing yards, a 61.6 completion percentage, 89 passing touchdowns and 54 interceptions, all with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
