Lamar Miller appears favored to win Dolphins’ starting RB job

Miami has a lot of options to replace Reggie Bush, but Miller seems to be the favorite so far.

Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE

No official decisions have been made yet, but Lamar Miller appears to have the inside track to win the starting running back job for the Miami Dolphins, according to a report from Adam Beasley of The Miami Herald on Thursday.

Entering his second season out of the University of Miami (Fla.), Miller is taking a majority of the snaps with the Dolphins' first team so far in Miami's organized team activities. Looking to replace Reggie Bush, who signed with the Detroit Lions this offseason, the Dolphins will also consider running backs Jonas Gray, Daniel Thomas, Marcus Thigpen and Mike Gillislee, according to Beasley's report.

As Beasley also writes, Miami was fine with Bush's departure because of what they had remaining on their roster. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill expressed confidence in Miller's ability in the Dolphins' offensive system:

“I think he’s just more comfortable. He knows the offense. He’s been in it for a year. He knows the protections. Now he can just go out and let his athletic ability shine for itself.”

Miller rushed for 250 yards and a touchdown on 51 carries for Miami in 2012. He was third on the team in both carries and yards behind Bush and Thomas, who finished first and second in those categories, respectively. The Dolphins ranked 17th in the league last season, averaging 112.6 yards on the ground per game.
