Philadelphia Eagles left guard Evan Mathis will miss the upcoming organized team activities and likely the summer minicamps as well, as Reuben Frank of CSN Philly reports that the offensive lineman had a minor ankle surgery that shouldn't be an issue by training camp.

Mathis, 31, was a third-round pick in the 2005 NFL Draft of the Carolina Panthers, but didn't flourish in the league until he joined the Eagles in 2011. In March 2012, he received a five-year extension from the Eagles after a dominant 2011 season.
On Monday, JasonB of SB Nation’s Bleeding Green Nation brushed off the significance of the injury and doesn’t think it should negatively affect Mathis much:
Mathis was, by far the best and most consistent presence on the Eagles offensive line last season. Not only did he have another good year, he was also the only starter on the unit not to get hurt. While now, as the Eagles introduce a brand new system, is not the optimal time to be missing reps it shouldn’t really be a big deal for a veteran like Mathis.
Mathis is expected to be 100 percent when the Eagles open training camp in late summer, but the team has some solid depth along the interior offensive line that shouldn't force the team to bring Mathis back in to the fold earlier than necessary. Danny Watkins, the team's first-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, has 18 starts in the last two seasons, but is expected to be a back-up as Todd Herremans is projected to move to the right guard spot in 2013.
