Darius Slay injury: Lions 2nd round draft pick has knee surgery

It was previously reported that Slay would not require surgery to repair a partially torn meniscus.

Debby Wong-USA TODAY Sports

Detroit Lions second-round pick Darius Slay had arthroscopic knee surgery on Friday, according to Adam Schefter, despite previous reports that the partial meniscus tear wouldn't require an operation to fix. However, the cornerback should be ready to re-join the Lions in time for training camp.

Slay’s meniscus tear was no secret to the Lions when they drafted him, but was considered so minor that he was expected to participate in the team’s rookie mini-camp, beginning on March 10. He even told Anwar Richardson of MLive.com that he had performed two private workouts prior to the draft with the knee injury.

The fourth selection in the second round, Slay is expected to step into the starting lineup right away for the Lions after the team allowed the sixth-most points in the NFL in 2012. In his senior season at Mississippi State, Slay finished with five interceptions and was selected seven picks before his All-American teammate, Johnthan Banks.
