Kellen Winslow Jr. signs with New York Jets

The veteran tight end found a home after trying out for the Jets earlier this week.

The New York Jets added a familiar face to NFL fans when they announced that tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. has signed with the team.

Winslow tried out with the Jets earlier this week and his signing makes it clear that he did enough to earn a longer look at the team’s upcoming training camp in August. Winslow faces an uphill climb, but the potential has always been there for the former No. 6 overall selection in the 2004 NFL Draft.

Gang Green Nation notes that the Jets could use the help at tight end after losing Dustin Keller earlier this offseason.

How much does one practice mean? Probably not a ton, but at least Winslow’s play sounds encouraging through one day. The Jets have arguably the thinnest corps of tight ends in the league at this point. If they sign Winslow, he will have by far the best resume of anybody at the position on the team. This feels like a spot where rolling the dice and hoping he can resurrect his career is a viable option.

Winslow never made good on the high selection made on him in the Draft, but he has enjoyed some high notes in his career -- including an 82 catch season in 2007 where he had over 1,000 receiving yards for the only time in his career. He's also enjoyed some low notes, however, as Winslow had just one catch for 12 yards last season with the New England Patriots.

Winslow is 29-years-old so he'll likely never become the player the Tampa Bay Buccaneers envisioned when selecting him, but there's probably enough in the tank for the Jets to take a flier on the veteran.
