Patriots forced to ‘ignore noise’ of dramatic offseason

Aaron Hernandez, Rob Gronkowski and even Tim Tebow have all contributed to a media circus-type offseason for the Patriots.

USA TODAY Sports

The challenge of a new group of wide receivers for Tom Brady looked to be one of the bigger challenges of the offseason for the New England Patriots, but now the team has had to deal with a litany of distractions. Shortly after losing tight end Rob Gronkowski to offseason surgery, tight end Aaron Hernandez stole headlines as part of a homicide investigation that has included his home being searched multiple times by police.

Where Hernandez has created a media circus for the Patriots, the team didn't do much to help the distractions either by signing quarterback Tim Tebow earlier in June.

On Sunday, linebacker Jerod Mayo spoke with Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston about dealing with the "noise" of the offseason, thus far:

“We always talk about ignoring the noise, and we’re doing the same now,” linebacker Jerod Mayo told ESPNBoston.com on Sunday. “Whether it’s good or bad, we always talk about ignoring the noise.”

Massachusetts State Police searched a pond near the home of Hernandez on Monday, but found “no evidence.” Two days earlier, the police removed 10 bags of evidence from the house, although Hernandez has not been arrested as of yet.

Hernandez is being investigated for his involvement in the murder of Odin Lloyd, whose body was found less than a mile from the house of the Patriots tight end. Hernandez has not yet been considered a suspect.
