Dolphins rumors: Vonta Leach expected to sign with Miami

Vonta Leach has been pursued by the Dolphins, who look to be the favorites to sign the three-time All-Pro.

USA TODAY Sports

The next stop for fullback Vonta Leach is likely Miami, as ESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted Monday that the Dolphins are working hard to make sure the three-time All-Pro is in their backfield in 2013.

Leach, 31, earned praise as one of the better blocking fullbacks in the NFL after helping to pave the way for a breakout, All-Pro season for Arian Foster in 2010. In the following offseason, Leach was given a three-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens that made him the highest-paid fullback in the NFL.

In two season with the Ravens, Leach started in 29 games and played in all 32 games possible, helping to earn Ray Rice consecutive trips to the Pro Bowl in 2011 and 2012.

Leach was released two weeks ago after the team failed to find a trade partner interested in acquiring Leach’s $4.33 million cap hit in 2013. When the Ravens switched from Cam Cameron to Jim Caldwell as offensive coordinator, Leach was phased out of the offense, making him a less valuable piece for the team in 2013.

The Dolphins will have a different looking running back group after allowing Reggie Bush to leave in free agency. Instead they'll turn to the unproven group of Lamar Miller, Daniel Thomas and fifth-round pick Mike Gillislee to fill the production of Bush.
