NFL transactions: Lions sign Chris Hope, Cowboys add Jerome Long

The Lions cut ties with a former second-round pick of the Browns so they could add a 12-year veteran.

Chris Hope's wishes to play in the 12th season of his NFL career took a positive step on Monday when he was signed by the Detroit Lions. A third-round pick in the 2002 NFL Draft, Hope played with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tennessee Titans before joining the Atlanta Falcons for just one season in 2012. He made three starts for the Falcons, but failed to record an interception in a season for the first time since 2003.

As Hope found a spot on the Lions roster, wide receiver Brian Robiskie lost his after he was released with a non-football injury designation. A second-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, Robiskie was released by the Lions earlier in the year as a way to clear salary cap space before he was brought back shortly thereafter.

Cowboys bolster defensive line

The Dallas Cowboys added some depth to their defensive line on Monday with the addition of defensive tackle Jerome Long, a seventh-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. Originally selected by the Kansas City Chiefs, Long spent most of his rookie year on the Chiefs practice squad before he was signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars, though he never appeared in a game.

Raiders waive linebacker

Second-year linebacker Mario Kurn was waived by the Oakland Raiders on Monday after spending his rookie season on injured reserve. Kurn suffered a torn ACL in August 2012 after he was signed as an undrafted free agent following the 2012 NFL Draft. He can be claimed by a team off the waiver wire before 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
