D.J. Fluker quickly earns respect from Chargers teammates

Fluker has only been with the Chargers for a couple months, but he’s already considered a leader by one veteran.

USA TODAY Sports

D.J. Fluker hasn't had his first NFL training camp yet with the San Diego Chargers, but the rookie offensive tackle is already a team leader in the eyes of one veteran teammate. Prior to a youth football camp over the weekend, Chargers fullback Le'Ron McClain spoke with Andrew Gribble of AL.com about Fluker's strong start with the team.

“He leads by example. He’s been breaking our team down every day before we start practice, getting everybody riled up for practice. He brings the same enthusiasm he had at Alabama into our locker room, and it’s working. He’s already a leader and he’s working hard.”

McClain is a fellow Alabama Crimson Tide alumnus, although his collegiate career ended with his senior season in 2006, three years before the arrival of Fluker in 2009. In Fluker's redshirt junior season with Alabama, he earned first-team All-American honors and was selected with the No. 11 overall selection in the 2013 NFL Draft.

In 2012, the Chargers finished with the fourth-most sacks allowed in the NFL, allowing quarterback Philip Rivers to go down 49 times. Along with the addition of Fluker, the Chargers also signed former Philadelphia Eagles tackle King Dunlap and former Pittsburgh Steelers tackle Max Starks.
