Brandon Marshall injury: Bears WR cleared to practice

In 2012, Marshall set the Bears franchise record for receptions and receiving yards in a single season.

USA TODAY Sports

Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall is now cleared to rejoin his teammates in practice, according to Marshall himself, who tweeted about the positive progress on Tuesday morning as he attempts to recover from offseason hip surgery.

Marshall, 29, had the hip surgery in January, causing him to miss the Pro Bowl after a season in which he broke the franchise’s single-season receiving record for receptions and yards. It’s not Marshall’s first recovery from such an injury, as Marshall had hip surgery during the 2009 offseason before finishing with 1,120 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns in the following season.

The Bears need Marshall to return sooner rather than later, too, as the receiving corps isn't very promising outside of the four-time Pro Bowl selection. In 2012, running back Matt Forte was the only player outside of Marshall that was able to eclipse 30 receptions and no other player caught more than three touchdowns.

T.J. Shouse of Windy City Gridiron echoed that sentiment last week:

Sadly, just like during the 2012 season, Brandon Marshall can’t do everything to save this group. Even if you like Jeffery and Bennett as No. 2 and No. 3 receivers, their injury concerns should give you pause when analyzing the wide receiver depth chart. And if they don’t, well, look at who’s in the running for the rest of the roster spots. Sure, you may like the potential of one or two of the young backups, but I don’t see how you can be very confident in them with their inexperience.

Marshall has finished with more than 1,000 yards receiving in each of the last six seasons and already ranks in the top 100 all-time in receiving yards.
