Geno Smith signs rookie deal with New York Jets

The Jets reached an agreement with their second-round pick.

USA TODAY Sports

The New York Jets have reached a contract agreement with rookie quarterback Geno Smith, according to a team announcement.

Smith was the second-round choice of the Jets in the 2013 NFL Draft after the West Virginia product unexpectedly fell out of the first round. The Jets ended his draft slide at No. 39 overall.

Smith finished out his stellar career at West Virginia with a senior season to remember, with a 71.2 completion percentage, 42 touchdowns and six interceptions. Smith led the nation in passing touchdowns. He also had 151 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

Smith will compete with Mark Sanchez for the starting quarterback job in Jets minicamp. Smith recently spoke to the media in a return to West Virginia and said he likes his chances to take the spot. Tommy Atkinson of the Gazette-Mail writes:

“I’m prepared,” Smith said. “I’m just getting better daily. I’ve improved so much from the time the [Pinstripe Bowl] ended [in December] to now. I continue to improve steadily. I feel like I have a great shot. I did a pretty good job overall of just adapting to the [Jets’] system and playbook and felt very comfortable with it by the end of OTAs [outside team activities] and mandatory [mini-] camp [in May and June].”

Matt Simms and Greg McElroy are also on the Jets depth chart at quarterback.
