Redskins interested in Brian Orakpo extension, per report

Orakpo had two surgeries in 2012, but the Redskins don’t want to lose him in free agency after the 2013 season.

The Washington Redskins are "intent" on giving an extension to outside linebacker Brian Orakpo, according to a report from Mark Maske of the Washington Post.

Orakpo, 26, earned Pro Bowl honors in each of his first two seasons with the Redskins and tallied 28.5 sacks in his first three seasons, but multiple injuries led to questions about an extension. Following shoulder surgery in January 2012 and season-ending surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle in September, Orakpo is now entering the final year of the five-year, $20 million deal he received as a rookie in 2009.

While the report from Maske says that the Redskins are looking to sign Orakpo to an extension “well before” he is eligible to become a free agent, it is unclear whether or not the team is negotiating with Orakpo’s representatives yet.

Orakpo started in just two games during the 2012 season before suffering his season-ending injury in Week 2. He is expected to be fully healthy when the Redskins open training camp on Thursday.
