Mario Williams injury: Bills DL out with sore foot

Williams is being held out of practice until the medical staff can determine the cause of his injury.

Timothy T. Ludwig-USA TODAY Sports

Mario Williams was unable to participate in the Buffalo Bills' first training camp practice of the year, but it doesn't appear to be as serious as some of the past injury issues suffered by the former top pick. The team's official website indicates that Williams will be held out until an evaluation from the team's medical staff clears Williams to participate though, meaning the current "sore foot" diagnosis could eventually end up being something worse.

Williams started all 16 games for the Bills last season, but his production was limited early in the season due to a wrist injury. There’s no indication yet that Williams will have to battle through injuries again when the regular season starts this year, but head coach Doug Marrone indicated that the injury -- however severe -- is disappointing.

“It’s more of a disappointment for the individual,” said Marrone. “Mario has put in a lot of hard work, went into the playbook and did a lot of work this offseason. So I always have a disappointment for the player because we forget how much work they put in and you have a player that definitely wants to be out there.”

Williams hasn’t made the Pro Bowl since 2009, but looked solid for the Bills last season when he compiled 10.5 sacks, 37 tackles and forced a pair of fumbles in his Buffalo debut. The 28-year-old lineman is entering his eighth NFL season.
