Broncos sign Ryan Lilja to 1-year deal, per report

The Broncos have lured former Peyton Manning teammate Ryan Lilja out of retirement.

John Rieger-US PRESSWIRE

The Denver Broncos will apparently attempt to shore up their offensive lines woes with veteran lineman Ryan Lilja. Denver has coaxed the 31-year-old out of retirement, according to the Denver Post's Mike Klis, and will sign him to a one-year deal.

Lilja retired after starting 15 games for the Kansas City Chiefs last season, the first time he received more starts at center than at left guard. He's expected to compete with Manny Ramirez to replace injured incumbents Dan Koppen and J.D. Walton at the center spot, however, and likely has a leg up on the competition due to his past experience.

Lilja played for the Indianapolis Colts from 2004 through 2009 and, although he wasn't the one snapping the ball to Peyton Manning, was a key starter on the offensive line. That experience, and the likely chemistry that came along with it, was likely a big reason he was signed by the Broncos.
