Dolphins depth chart: Lamar Miller, Daniel Thomas are ‘neck and neck’

Miami is trying to decide whether Miller or Thomas will replace Reggie Bush as the team’s starting running back, but the competition is apparently still too close to call.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Dolphins are attempting to clarify their starting running back situation, but apparently three games of preseason action hasn't been enough to separate candidates Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas.

Thomas has received 14 touches this preseason for 77 total yards compared to Miller’s 12 touches for 46 yards and a touchdown. Miller has been the team’s starter through the first three exhibition games, but offensive coordinator Mike Sherman said Tuesday that he isn’t ready to name a starter just yet:

“I think Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas are competing neck and neck.”

Miller is heading into his second season after scoring one touchdown on 57 touches during his rookie year compared to Thomas's 40 more carries and three more four touchdowns last year. Both are competing for Reggie Bush's old job.

It would seem that Miller is going to be the team’s starter when the regular season rolls around considering he’s generally thought to have more upside, been starting this preseason and the fact that quarterback Ryan Tannenhill predicted as much back in June. If Thomas is keeping pace like Sherman says he is, however, it could create for an interesting backfield in Miami.
