Kendall Hunter injury: 49ers RB expected to make preseason debut

Frank Gore’s primary backup will finally make his debut after an Achilles injury nine months ago.

USA TODAY Sports

Kendall Hunter is expected to make his preseason debut for the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday when the team hosts the Minnesota Vikings for Week 3.

Hunter has been out for the last nine months after partially tearing his Achilles tendon in a game against the New Orleans Saints. Hunter was placed on the preseason Physically Unable to Play list (PUP), but was recently activated on Aug. 10. Hunter still sat out the team's last game against the Kansas City Chiefs, but apparently he's ready to make his debut.

Niners Nation recently noted that the odds are in Hunter’s favor for a full recovery:

Now that team doctors have let go of their medical leash, we will begin to see Hunter become more acquainted with the results of the surgery. Statistically, 80 percent of patients who reach this point, will be able to perform everything they did before the injury. Only about 5 percent of patients coming from Achilles rupture surgery will re-rupture. The odds are in his favor.

The 24-year-old was the 49ers fourth-round selection in the 2011 NFL Draft. He appeared in 11 games last year for the Niners and had 72 rushes for 371 yards and two touchdowns. He is once again expected to be Frank Gore's primary backup.
