Ryan Williams returns to practice for Arizona Cardinals

The oft-injured back is fighting for his roster spot with a new head coach in place in Bruce Arians.

Running back Ryan Williams will practice today with the Arizona Cardinals, according to head coach Bruce Arians. Darren Urban reports that the oft-injured back will finally return to the field after a frustrating preseason dealing with a knee injury.

With the return of the 23-year-old to practice, Arians will finally get a chance to take an extended preseason look at his full backfield. The team brought in Rashard Mendenhall, formerly of the Pittsburgh Steelers, this offseason in free agency, and the team drafted Williams in the second round in the 2011 NFL Draft. The team also drafted running backs Stepfan Taylor in the fifth round and Andre Ellington in the sixth round of this year's draft.

Williams is likely fighting for his roster spot in the next few days given the investment in the backfield this offseason to help take pressure off of new quarterback Carson Palmer. The talent is clearly there given the high investment and his output at Virginia Tech averaging 5.3 yards per carry in college. However, injuries have prevented Williams from playing at all his rookie season and limited him to only five games last season.

Williams is likely to play on Saturday against the San Diego Chargers, according to Kent Somer. If so, it might be the only game-time situation that he gets for Arians before facing roster cuts due on Monday as every team drops from 90 players to 75.
