Will Smith injury: Saints LB lost for season, per report

The Saints defense takes another hit with the loss of Smith after two other players have already been declared out for 2013.

New Orleans Saints linebacker Will Smith will reportedly miss the entire 2013 regular season due to a knee injury, according to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio.

Smith went down with an unspecified injury during the Saints' recent game against the Houston Texans. He limped off the field and went to the locker room. Now it's clear the knee injury was serious, although the team has not officially announced what it is yet.

Smith has made 120 starts for the Saints in his nine-year career, all with the Saints. He’s been a consistent pass rushing presence throughout his tenure, with six sacks last season and 67.5 in his career. While he’s not the force he used to be, he’s definitely a savvy veteran who provided the Saints with a dependable player for their edge rush.

Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan will now be forced to change things up on a defense that already lost linebacker Victor Butler and defensive lineman Kenyon Coleman for the season. The good news is that the Saints drafted rookies John Jenkins and Rufus Johnson, who will both help along the line.
