NFL news roundup: Michael Vick to start over Nick Foles, injuries still rampant, Brandon Moore re-retires

Michael Vick will start the Eagles’ first preseason game, Brandon Moore won’t take the chance to live down the infamous “buttfumble” and serious injuries continued to garner headlines across the league.

USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia Eagles have been adamant that either Michael Vick or Nick Foles could be the team's starting quarterback this season. It seems as though Vick might have an edge, however, as Chip Kelly is putting the more-athletic player in charge of the first team for Friday's preseason opener.

Vick started 10 games for the Eagles last season, and Foles was at the helm for the remaining six, but not much should be gleaned from last season now that Kelly is in charge of the offense.

The curious case of Brandon Moore

Brandon Moore is perhaps going to go down in history for his part in the notorious "buttfumble" play during this past season with the New York Jets. The veteran offensive lineman made headlines for a different reason in the past 24 hours, though, deciding to sign with the Dallas Cowboys and then retire before boarding the plane.

Moore started 142 games during his 10-year career with the Jets, but was set to join the Cowboys on Wednesday as an injury-replacement along their offensive line. The 33-year-old decided not to get on the plane, however, because he didn’t want to uproot his family.

Unsurprisingly, this shocked Blogging The Boys’ Dave Haprin.

Last night as I went to bed I was pretty excited about what I thought would be the Cowboys new offensive line. Smith-Leary-Frederick-Moore-Free sounds good, it gave one hope that the Cowboys line could actually turn into an asset.

The Cowboys would have turned over all three interior spots that have been so problematic in the past. Brandon Moore would have been the last piece of the puzzle and last night Dallas thought they had reached a one-year deal with free agent guard from the New York Jets.

Fellow veteran offensive lineman Brian Waters is likely going to be the team's next target.

Season-ending injuries continue to pile up around the NFL

The Eagles now have even more to worry about than just their starting quarterback and the ongoing Riley Cooper saga, however, as wide receiver Arrelious Benn will miss the upcoming season after being placed on the injured reserve Wednesday.

Benn wasn’t a lock to make the Eagles roster, but he was listed as the fourth-option on their preseason depth chart. His injury continues a disturbing trend for Philadelphia, too, as explained by Bleeding Green Nation’s Jimmy Kempski:

Arrelious Benn went down at one point during practice today. He got up, limped off, and I can’t recall seeing him for the rest of practice. It turns out Benn tore his left ACL. If that is indeed the play on which he got injured, it is the 3rd ACL that has occurred on the middle field at the NovaCare complex.

Benn’s placement on the injured reserve Wednesday followed in some familiar footsteps around the NFL:

Packers are fighting each other

The Green Bay Packers have dealt with a few big injuries of their own already in training camp, but that's not why the Super Bowl contenders get their own headline in this column. They get that because their likely should have been an injury after tight end Jermichael Finley caused a bit of a ruckus.

Yikes.
