Rams vs. Browns, NFL preseason: St. Louis keeps it simple in loss

The St. Louis Rams didn’t look terrible in their first game of the preseason, but the Cleveland Browns took advantage of a basic playbook en route to a 27-19 victory in their preseason opener.

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

The Cleveland Browns scored 17 points before the St. Louis Rams got on the board Friday night. The Rams didn't struggle as much as that stat makes it seem, however, though they eventually lost a 27-19 decision in their first game of the preseason.

Sam Bradford was solid, throwing for 102 yards and a touchdown while completing five of his eight passing attempts, but the rest of the Rams' offense wasn't really given too many opportunities to shine in what looked to be a very vanilla version of their offense. The defensive schemes seem to be rudimentary as well, allowing Cleveland's quarterback triumvirate of Brandon Weeden, Brian Hoyer and Jason Campbell to complete 26 of their 34 passes for 238 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The game’s outcome wasn’t a concern for our friends over at Turf Show Times, as Brandon Birkhead summed up the preseason opener with the following paragraph:

All in all, there were some things that went badly, and things that went well, but it’s the first game of the preseason. The team will look at the film and fix what wrong. The team was running very basic scheme on both offense and defense. The game was simply the first chance to see our players in action against another team.

The Rams will get a chance to open up the playbook next weekend when they host the Green Bay Packers at home.
