Bears vs. Steelers 2013: Chicago defense left Ben Roethlisberger ‘stumbling’

Pittsburgh had its chances but ultimately lost due to five turnovers and missed opportunities.

Justin K. Aller

On a night where many said the Pittsburgh Steelers had to beat the Chicago Bears, the black and gold came up short in a messy 40-24 defeat at Heinz Field on Sunday night.

Pittsburgh fell behind 24-3 early before rallying to make the score 27-20 with less than six minutes remaining before Jay Cutler and Earl Bennett hooked up on a 3rd down, 17-yard touchdown to finish off the competitive phase of the contest.

Over at Winy City Gridiron, Steven Schweickert talked about the Bears defense forcing Ben Roethlisberger to feel uncomfortable in the pocket:

The Bears picked up three sacks on the day. One of them was Lance Briggs' forced fumble on Roethlisberger which Peppers snagged out of the air and ran back. The other two were D.J. Williams coming in and laying a hammer on Roethlisberger. And Roethlisberger can take a hit - if you're sending him stumbling back four yards like Frankenstein's Monster hitting his head on an overhanging I-beam, you're doing something right.

The Steelers never seemed in total rhythm offensively, struggling at times to pick up the blitz and at others just missing easy plays. Pittsburgh actually outgained Chicago by the whoping margin of 459 to 258, but lost because of five turnovers, four coming from Roethlisberger.

Neal Coolong of Behind The Steel Curatin focused on a good performance, turned in by wide receiver Antonio Brown:

There won’t likely be any confrontations between Brown and offensive coordinator Todd Haley after his performance Sunday night. One of the greatest catches you’ll ever see, and 196 yards, along with two touchdowns. Without question, Brown’s best career game.

Next week, the Bears take on the Detroit Lions while the Steelers travel to face the Minnesota Vikings.
