NFL news roundup: Geno Smith and Mark Sanchez still competing; Packers’ Casey Hayward ruled out for Sunday

Geno Smith’s starting job isn’t set in stone yet, and cornerback Casey Hayward won’t play for the Packers in Week 1. This, plus more stories from Wednesday afternoon and evening.

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Even though Geno Smith was named the starter for the New York Jets in Week 1, his competition with Mark Sanchez is still ongoing, according to team owner Woody Johnson. The Jets preseason quarterback competition ran rife with injuries and turnovers, and it looks more like Smith was named the starter for Week 1 by default because of Mark Sanchez's shoulder injury.

Sanchez injured his right shoulder in the team’s third preseason game, and Smith was far from perfect during his start in the same game, finishing with one touchdown against three interceptions.

Casey Hayward ruled out of Week 1

The Green Bay Packers' defense took a big blow after head coach Mike McCarthy said cornerback Casey Hayward would sit out the season opener against the San Francisco 49ers because of a hamstring injury.

Hayward initially tweaked his hamstring in July during a workout and it took him close to a month to get back to practice. He re-aggravated his hamstring in the third preseason game and has been sitting ever since. Hayward was the highest-rated cornerback on the Packers last season and a finalist for the rookie Defensive Player of the Year award. Green Bay will give rookie Micah Hyde a serious look during Hayward's absence.

Terrelle Pryor doesn’t have a vote of confidence in Oakland

Terrelle Pryor is officially the Oakland Raiders' starting quarterback, but there is "a lot of skepticism" about his place, according to Dan Hanzus with NFL.com.

For Oakland, it isn't like they have much of a choice in starting Pryor. Matt Flynn was underwhelming in the preseason and has struggled with an elbow injury. Rookie Tyler Wilson is still with the team, but just as a member of the practice squad. Other rookie Matt McGloin signed with the Raiders after going undrafted. In other words, if not Pryor, then who else?

Darrelle Revis to clue Buccaneers into Jets’ game plan

Darrelle Revis has no qualms with telling his new team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, what the New York Jets will try and run during their season opener on Sunday, Rick Stroud with the Tampa Bay Times reported.

Revis spent the past six seasons with the Jets before heading over to Tampa Bay, and even if he can’t play because of injury, he should prove useful on the sideline. Revis admitted that it is “almost a bit like stealing,” but in the end, a win is a win. It also probably isn’t the first time a player has spilled the game plan beans about his former team.

Seahawks cornerback Brandon Browner limited in practice on Wednesday

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Brandon Browner showed up on the team's injury report on Wednesday.

Browner, one of the stable members of Seattle's secondary, was listed as having limited participation in practice on Wednesday due to a hamstring injury. There isn't much known about the severity of the injury because coach Pete Carroll spoke with the media before practice took place. If Browner is unable to play on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers, he will most likely be replaced by Walter Thurmond.

Ravens place Dennis Pitta on injured reserve-designated to return list

The Baltimore Ravens are giving tight end Dennis Pitta a chance to return to the team later in the season after placing him on the injured reserve-designated to return list on Wednesday.

The Ravens had to wait until Wednesday to avoid subjecting Pitta to waivers, and he now no longer counts towards the 53-man roster. Pitta was one of Flacco’s favorite targets in 2012, but will most likely miss most of, if not all, of the season after dislocating and fracturing his hip early in training camp.
