Packers’ David Bakhtiari, Saints’ Keenan Lewis broke concussion rules during Wild Card games

Despite advice from trainers, two players didn’t leave the field during Wild Card weekend.

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

Green Bay Packers left tackle David Bakhtiari and New Orleans Saints cornerback Keenan Lewis were in violation of the NFL's concussion rules during the Wild Card round of the NFL Playoffs last weekend.

The Associated Press obtained a letter from the NFL’s head, neck and spine committee chairmen sent to every team doctor and trainer in the league. The letter stated that one player re-entered the game and another stayed on the sideline, both without clearance. While the letter didn’t name the players, the AP is reporting Bakhtiari went back into the game for an extra point without being cleared, and Lewis stayed on the sideline for the Saints. Earlier in the week, reports from ESPN and FOX said Bakhtiari pushed his way past the medical staff and back onto the field.

Despite the violations, the league found no fault in how the doctors handled the situation, given that both players refused to follow the advice of trainers. According to league rules, a player must be taken to the locker room or another quiet area if diagnosed with a concussion. Both the Packers and Saints declined comment, and no fines are expected, according to the AP.
