Broncos, Seahawks restrict ticket sales for conference championship games

The Seahawks are looking to cut down on scalpers, meaning tickets to the NFC Championship will likely be very expensive for 49ers fans.

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

Tickets went on sale for the AFC and NFC Championships Monday morning, but if you weren’t a resident of a state near the host sites, you were already out of luck if you wanted to purchase tickets to the games.

For San Francisco 49ers fans, the secondary market will likely be necessary, as the Seahawks would not accept ticket sales from credit cards with California addresses. The only states where payment was accepted by the team were Washington, Oregon, Montana, Idaho, Alaska, Hawaii and the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Alberta.

Similarly, the Denver Broncos did not accept credit card payment from places other than Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Montana, South Dakota and Western Kansas.

The teams hope that the ticket restrictions will help to cut down on the secondary market and help to eliminate scalpers that buy up the tickets with no intention to attend the game.

The Seahawks have drawn criticism for the exclusion of California though, as Kevin Lynch of SFGate called it a move that “will preference tickets to Seahawks fans” and limit a fanbase that is “known for traveling.”
