NFL roundup: Jim Haslett retained in Washington, Mike Zimmer introduced by Vikings

The Washington Redskins will retain the services of defensive coordinator Jim Haslett going forward. The team fired head coach Mike Shanahan and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, but new head coach Jay Gruden will keep Haslett in place on the defensive side of the ball. It's a somewhat surprising move given that Haslett's defenses have been sub-par over four years in Washington, as the team finished in the top half of the league in total defense just once (13th in 2011).

The Minnesota Vikings introduced Mike Zimmer as the team's new head coach on Friday. Zimmer addressed the media for the first time, and was very passionate and excited. One of the hot topics was the blunt, fiery personality that was on display during HBO's Hard Knocks program. Zimmer said that wasn't all him, that he's "an honest guy."

Malcom Floyd has a spinal disk issue, stemming from a hit he sustained in Week 2 of the 2013 season. Floyd's doctors have told him that the injury is potentially career-ending, but that other players have returned to the game with the same injury. It will be some time before he knows, though he will have an appointment next month for further evaluation.

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Davone Bess was arrested early Friday morning for assaulting a police officer. According to the arrest report, Bess was "acting irrationally and was dancing and singing as his pants repeatedly fell down" when an officer asked him if he was all right. Bess didn't respond, but grabbed a cup of coffee which didn't belong to him and squeezed it, causing some of the hot liquid to spill on the officer. According to the report, he then took a fighting stance and refused to get on the ground until backup arrived.

Oakland Raiders running back Darren McFadden is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, and Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie believes McFadden will test the market. McFadden is incredibly talented and one of the best running backs in the NFL when he's on his game, but he's dealt with significant injuries in recent years and has been unable to put together a complete season. It's hard to imagine a scenario in which a team pays him top dollar this offseason.

St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford expects to be ready for training camp and other offseason activities later this year. Bradford sustained an ACL tear that ended his season in October, and the Rams missed the playoffs. He had knee surgery just over eight weeks ago. It's unclear if Bradford will even be with the Rams though, given that he has a large cap hit next year and the team could look elsewhere for a quarterback this offseason.
