NFL roundup: Buccaneers hire Lovie Smith, Redskins to interview Perry Fewell and more

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers hired Lovie Smith to be their head coach, the Washington Redskins are set to interview Perry Fewell and more you might have missed from

Jonathan Daniel

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have hired Lovie Smith to be their next coach. Smith has been a hot commodity this offseason, with several teams reportedly interested, but the Buccaneers won out. The Buccaneers have had a ton of issues with things getting away from them on and off the field of late, and Smith has always been regarded as a coach who can keep control of his team and remain well-liked. Former Cal coach Jeff Tedford will join Smith in Tampa, ESPN's John Clayton reports (via ESPN's Brett McMurphy).

Here’s what else you might have missed from Wednesday in the NFL:

Washington to interview Fewell

The Washington Redskins have requested permission to interview New York Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell for their head coaching vacancy. The Redskins fired Mike Shanahan after the conclusion of the regular season on Sunday. Fewell was a big name in the coaching searches last season, but remained with the Giants. The team struggled this season, but Fewell's defense was still in the top 10 in the NFL.

Fisher sustains injury in practice

Kansas City Chiefs right tackle Eric Fisher sustained a groin injury in practice on Tuesday. He was held out of practice on Wednesday and there is now doubt as to whether or not he'll play against the Indianapolis Colts in the wild card round on Saturday. Fisher was the first overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft and would be a big loss for the Chiefs.

Cleveland expected to hire Schwartz

The Cleveland Browns are expected to hire former Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz ... to lead their defense. Schwartz's specialty is defense, but it's still surprising the move is being made. The reason it's surprising is simple: the Browns have not yet replaced head coach Rob Chudzinski, who was fired after the conclusion of the regular season. It seems odd to hire a defensive coordinator before a head coach is in place.

Dolphins considering scorched Earth

The Miami Dolphins are reportedly considering an extensive shakeup of the front office and coaching staff. Miami fell short of the playoffs this season and were particularly poor on the offensive side of the ball despite investing heavily in it this offseason. Also, coach Joe Philbin and general manager Jeff Ireland have come under fire for issues in the locker room.

Redskins to interview Caldwell

The Washington Redskins are set to interview Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell. Washington is looking to replace Shanahan, who failed to make the most of an offense that owner Dan Snyder both believes in and has invested heavily in. Caldwell has a history of offensive success with strong quarterbacks and would likely be brought in solely to help Robert Griffin III to succeed.

Bridgewater to enter draft

Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater will enter the 2014 NFL Draft. Bridgewater is considered one of the favorites to be taken with the No. 1 overall pick by the Houston Texans, or at least in the top five picks. Houston in particular is in need of a franchise quarterback after the position absolutely fell apart this season.
