The Jets are expected to cut ties with wide receiver Santonio Holmes this offseason, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini. Holmes is due a $1 million bonus in March and is scheduled to have a cap number of $8.25 million next season.

If Holmes is cut before his bonus deadline, the Jets would avoid paying Holmes his bonus and a $10.75 million cap hit. Holmes turns 30 in March and has had a laundry list of health issues over the last several seasons. He has missed 21 games over his four seasons with New York. He has had two back-to-back injury-riddled seasons that have seen him take the field only 15 times. He has only scored two touchdowns in the last two seasons.
Once heralded as a top receiving threat, Holmes has somewhat become an afterthought in the eyes of both the media and NFL fans. Likely in need of a fresh start, Holmes would probably get a low-cost deal to compete for a starting job in a new atmosphere. Jets general manager John Idzik is likely looking to spend big money to add to the roster, and dropping Holmes would allow for New York to do that. Quarterback Mark Sanchez and cornerback Antonio Cromartie also expected to be cut before free agency, per Cimini. Dropping those three players would result in more than $26.1 million in additional cap space.
Along with Holmes, the Jets currently have a wide receiver group that features Stephen Hill, Jeremy Kerley, David Nelson and Greg Salas. New York currently owns the 18th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.
