Fred Davis is facing a six-game suspension for a failed marijuana test, a league source told Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com. Davis is an impending free agent after an injury-riddled and ineffective 2013 season with the Washington Redskins.
Fred Davis facing 6-game suspension for failed marijuana test, per report
Fred Davis is back in hot water just as he is about to hit free agency.
Davis has been suspended for a failed drug test before. He sat out the first four games of the 2011 season before going on to record a career-best 59 receptions for 796 yards. In 2012, he was placed under the Redskins' franchise tag, but tore his Achilles' tendon after just seven games. This past season, Davis was effectively benched in favor of Logan Paulsen.
With a suspension apparently forthcoming, it seems unlikely that the Redskins will re-sign Davis before he hits the market in March. Davis may struggle to find any suitors, given his injury history, precipitous drop in production and off-field problems.
Then again, Davis isn’t that far removed from being a productive tight end. The former second-round pick is still relatively young at 28 years old. He could bounce back in due time. If he does, he probably won’t be in Washington.
