Ron Rivera, Panthers talking contract extension

A 12-4 season could get Rivera a second contract with the Panthers.

The Carolina Panthers and head coach Ron Rivera have begun talking about a contract extension, according to the Charlotte Observer.

Rivera, who led the Panthers to a 12-4 record and a first-place finish in the NFC South in 2013, has one season left on his contract that was worth a total of $11.2 million when he signed it before the 2011 season. Rivera is in the running for AP Coach of the Year and was already named coach of the year by the Pro Football Writers of America.

The Panthers started off the season 0-2, and some were wondering whether or not Rivera would keep his job. He turned the season around, though, and now a multi-year extension looks likely.

Carolina has work to do to stay atop a competitive division. Still, just three years ago, the Panthers were picking No. 1 overall in the 2011 draft. Now, they have a division championship and a bright future. Rivera is a big part of that.
