Branden Albert likely Cardinals’ first priority in free agency

The Cardinals will be looking to beef up their offensive line this offseason.

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Kansas City Chiefs offensive tackle Branden Albert is likely to be the top free agent target of the Arizona Cardinals, according to FOX Sports 910 Phoenix. Albert is coming off his sixth season and first Pro Bowl selection after being franchise tagged by the Chiefs last offseason.

While Albert made the Pro Bowl this season, he has missed six games over the last two seasons due to injury. Albert missed four games in 2013 with a knee injury. A former first-round pick, Albert made $9.8 million on the franchise tag this season and is likely looking for a raise. The Cardinals would probably need to surrender roughly $10-12 million per season to land Albert.

Similar offensive tackles have cashed in midway through their careers. Eagles left tackle Jason Peters was made the highest paid offensive lineman in the league in 2009, when he signed a six-year, $60 million deal. Browns blindside blocker Joe Thomas signed a seven-year, $84 million contract in 2011. Albert is not in their league as a player, but should command a similar deal.
