New Dolphins general manager Dennis Hickey said he was excited to be part of the organization on Tuesday, during his introductory press conference. Hickey takes over for Jeff Ireland, who mutually parted ways with the franchise on Jan. 7. The Dolphins interviewed several candidates before hiring Hickey, who previously worked in the Tampa Buccaneers front office.

Among the other reported candidates for the job were Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio and Titans vice president of player personnel Lake Dawson, who both turned down the position. Browns assistant general manager Ray Farmer was also interviewed and withdrew from the search.

Despite the lack of enthusiasm for the job around the league, Hickey said that he believes the franchise has the ownership, front office and coaching staff in place to succeed.

“I see an organization that has the foundation, that has the people, that has the vision, to be a championship organization,” Hickey said. “The structure was completely clear. That was a draw to me, to work with talented people.”

Hickey is looking to succeed in short time and has faith in head coach Joe Philbin.

“As I followed [Philbin’s] career, it was no surprise to me that he continued to climb the ladder,” Hickey said. “We both want a tough, smart, physical football team.”

Owner Steve Ross said replacing Ireland with Hickey will help up the franchise establish cohesion.

“We needed to have harmony in the organization,” Ross said. “When you want to win football games, you have to have one organization, one mindset.”

Hickey will be in charge of the roster, according to the organization’s Twitter account.
