Sam Shields injury: Packers CB has bone bruise

Shields’ knee injury is not as bad as initially reported.

Green Bay Packers cornerback Sam Shields got good news on Monday: his knee injury suffered on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers is not as severe as initially expected, according to Pro Football Talk.

Initial reports indicated a possible MCL sprain, but an MRI on Monday showed only a bone bruise and no structural damage.

Shields was injured on the 49ers' opening possession while trying to tackle wide receiver Michael Crabtree.

Shields is scheduled to become a free agent this offseason, and the mild diagnosis could bode well for his chances of re-signing with the team. A serious knee injury would have undoubtedly hurt his bargaining power, though it could have driven his cost down enough to make him a bargain re-sign for the Packers.

Shields started in all but two games for the Packers this season, posting 61 tackles and four interceptions.

Linebacker Mike Neal, whose contract is also expiring, also suffered a knee injury in the loss. There has been no word on the severity of his injury.
