NFL roundup: Alex Smith to receive an extension from Chiefs, Ravens face tough decisions on Terrelle Suggs and Dennis Pitta

Alex Smith’s contract and the Ravens’ offseason plans are making headlines on Wednesday.

The Chiefs plan to sign quarterback Alex Smith to a contract extension, according to National Football Post's Jason Cole. He is entering the final season of a deal three-year pact that he signed with the 49ers in 2012. Smith helped lead the Chiefs to an 11-5 record and set career highs in passing yardage and touchdowns in his first season in Kansas City.

It is unclear how long or for how much the extension for would be for Smith, but he has been comparable to Jay Cutler over the last three seasons. Cutler signed a seven-year, $126 million contract with the Bears earlier this month and is older than Smith. The former 49er has a 30-9-1 record over the last three seasons.

Here are some more headlines you may have missed on Wednesday:

Dennis Pitta could be franchise tagged by Ravens

The Ravens may have to place the franchise tag on tight end Dennis Pitta, according to the Baltimore Sun. Ozzie Newsome told reporters on Wednesday that he would like to re-sign Pitta but did acknowledge the chance of losing him in free agency, according to Aaron Wilson. The tag for a tight end is calculated as $6.06 million, according OverTheCap.com.

Pitta could be able to cash in like Jared Cook did in St. Louis this past offseason. Cook signed a five-year, $35.1 million contract with the Rams before this past season. Pitta had similar numbers to Cook in 2011, but broke his hip in training camp and missed the first 12 games of this past season.

Terrell Suggs contract an issue for Ravens

The Ravens will a big decision to make when comes to linebacker Terrell Suggs' contract. He is due $7.8 million in this upcoming season and will be a $12.4 million cap hit, so it will put the Ravens in a bind with cap space. Suggs struggled down the stretch in 2013 and only had one sack in the last eight games of the season.

Newsome is open to giving Suggs an extension but is not going to restructure his current contract. The Ravens are projected to be just $9 million under the salary cap this offseason. Dropping Suggs from the roster would open up a lot of money to spend on free agents.

Johnny Manziel declares for 2014 NFL Draft, per report

Texas A&M superstar quarterback Johnny Manziel is headed to the NFL, according to NFL.com’s Gil Brandt. Manziel is now part of a rapidly growing record 80 underclassmen group of prospects. A potential first-round pick with a Heisman Trophy on his resume, Manziel has plenty of options for a possible destination in the selection process.

A redshirt sophomore, Manziel could get looks from the Texans (No. 1 pick), Rams (No. 2), Jaguars (No. 3), Browns (No. 4) and Raiders (No. 5). Manziel scored 84 touchdowns in two seasons at Texas A&M.
