Robert Griffin III out Monday night vs. Cowboys

Robert Griffin III is out Monday night against the Cowboys. Colt McCoy will start under center for Washington.

Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III will not play on Monday night, according to NFL Network's Albert Breer. Head coach Jay Gruden told reporters last week that unless Griffin was "100 percent ready to go," he would not suit up against the Dallas Cowboys. Colt McCoy, who was named the starter earlier last week, will get the nod.

Griffin dislocated his ankle in Week 2 against the Jacksonville Jaguars and the initial timetable for his return was six to eight weeks. Griffin resumed running drills two weeks ago and was cleared to practice for the first time last Wednesday. He participated in individual drills and the team portion of the practice, and was even seen taking reps with the first team.

Kirk Cousins had started the last five games for Washington, but was benched in the second half of the Week 7 win over the Tennessee Titans in favor of McCoy, who will now make his first start since 2011 on Monday night. It will also be the Texas native's first start in his home state since a Nov. 2011 meeting between the Browns and Texans in Houston.

McCoy completed 11-of-12 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown in relief of Cousins last Sunday, as Washington rallied from a 10-6 halftime deficit for its second win of the season. McCoy was 6-15 as a starter with the Cleveland Browns from 2010-11, but has appeared in just eight games since then.
