Michael Vick wasn’t prepared to play against Chargers

After playing poorly in relief of Geno Smith on Sunday, Michael Vick says he wasn’t prepared to enter the game because he didn’t respect his time on the scout team.

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

New York Jets quarterback Michael Vick says he took his reps with the scout team for granted last week and wasn't prepared to face the San Diego Chargers. Vick entered Sunday's game in the midst of a 31-0 blowout by the Chargers and didn't fare well, completing just eight of 19 passes for 47 yards.

As the backup to Geno Smith -- who was even worse, going 4-of-12 for 27 yards and an interception -- Vick gets his practice snaps with the scout team, splitting those with third-stringer Matt Simms.

Vick later regretted not taking more advantage of his scout-team reps, saying it left him unprepared to play, via ESPN:

“I felt like I, for some reason, being a quarterback in his 12th year, sometimes you take things for granted,” Vick said Wednesday. “I think I took the scout team for granted.”

Vick did admit he learned from his mistake, though:

“I learned my lesson last week: Always stay ready, always be prepared.” Vick said. “This is the first time I’ve been in this position [backup quarterback] for this length of time, and to just get thrown out there last week, it was fun to go out there and play. But it left a bitter taste in my mouth that I wasn’t able to put points on the board or even help this team in any fashion.”

The Jets' backup might need to be ready again soon. Vick was signed to be a mentor to Smith, but things have gotten off to a rocky start on the field, with New York 1-4 and about to take on the Denver Broncos. Smith is still the Jets' starter, but he isn't earning himself many supporters lately, especially when he does things like miss team meetings because he can't figure out the time change on the road.
