The Cleveland Browns released running back Ben Tate on Tuesday morning, according to Zac Jackson of Fox Sports Ohio. The move is somewhat surprising with Tate having signed a two-year, $6.2 million deal this offseason after playing three seasons with the Houston Texans.

After less than one season with the Browns, Tate is back on the free agent market.

However, Tate failed to produce for the Browns, rushing for 333 yards on 3.1 yards per carry with four touchdowns. Before this year, Tate had his best season in 2011, amassing 942 yards on 5.4 yards per attempt. Tate slid down the crowded Cleveland depth chart, giving way to rookies Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell. Last week against the Texans, Tate only carried the ball twice, losing 9 yards.
By cutting Tate, the Browns take on $750,000 of dead money against their 2015 cap but have an ultimate savings of $3 million. With Crowell and West producing nicely, Tate was likely to be buried on the bench. The question now is whether Tate can catch on with another team in need of a back.
