Sio Moore apologizes for sack celebration vs. Chiefs

Oakland earned its first win of the year on Thursday night, but Moore had some explaining to do after the game for his antics.

It took a year, but the Oakland Raiders finally got a win. After beating the Kansas City Chiefs 24-20 at the O.co Coliseum on Thursday, the Raiders broke their 16-game losing streak to the delight of their fans and players alike.

On the final desperation drive for Kansas City, Alex Smith was sacked with the Chiefs out of timeouts to stop the clock. After the play, Raiders linebacker Sio Moore began celebrating with teammate Khalil Mack in the Kansas City backfield, almost for the entire 40-second play clock.

The antics forced Oakland to stop the clock by calling a timeout to avoid taking a penalty. Luckily for the Raiders, they held the Chiefs on the ensuing fourth down play.

While the win undoubtedly feels good for Oakland, some of the veteran players were not happy with Moore, per the official team website. It was a moment that could have become a disaster for a team that can’t afford one.

"I don’t need any more of that," safety Charles Woodson said. "I couldn’t believe it. I told them that was the first time I had ever seen somebody celebrate for a whole 40-second clock. That was ridiculous, and they know it. I told Sio he’s lucky we got the win because we really probably would’ve had to fight, and I would’ve seen exactly what kind of fighter he was. I’m glad we got that win."

Moore apologized afterward for his actions.

"I was so caught up in the moment, man," Moore said. "That was an error I’ve got to make sure I clean up, because in another situation – in all seriousness – that can make the difference and I’ve got to understand that. I do apologize for putting the guys in that situation because that could come up in another situation later. Can’t let the emotions get the best of me, man."

For now, the moment will be lost into time, although head coach Tony Sparano is intent on bringing it up to Moore in the future.

"I didn’t pull them aside. I’m going to let them enjoy this right now, but eventually we’ve got to talk about it [laughing]. We’ll have a little conversation about that, but at that point, I had to do something to stop the clock. They were on the ball and that’s something that it’s two young players that have to learn. I love their energy and their passion, but it’s just something we have to learn from."

Moore was the team’s third round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. He has 82 tackles and three sacks on the season.
